Trader Joe’s, Costco, and Amazon Are Top U.S. Grocery Retailers
These companies beat out Walmart, Wegman's, Aldi, Whole Foods, and more thanks to their quality products at low prices, according to a new survey.
Every year, multiple reports and price checks are released ranking America’s best and worst grocery stores. But we’re paying special attention to this year’s lists, due to Amazon’s emergence into the grocery space and the U.S. arrival of new budget grocery stores, such as Aldi.
A report released on Monday, Jan. 15 by dunnhumby, a customer data science company, ranked grocery stores using both emotional connection (via a 15-minute online survey across 11,000 households) and financial metrics (2016 market share, sales per square foot, etc.). Their findings, summarized in the 2018 Retailer Preference Index, landed Trader Joe’s squarely in the number one spot, with Costco at number two and Amazon taking the bronze.
After analyzing the results of the survey, the company found seven primary drivers of customer preference. The two most dominant are price and quality, followed by digital (easy to shop online), convenience, speed, discounts, and operations (prices frequently change). So while a speedy checkout and convenient locations are important, customers tend to care more about the right price, the right products, and the right store experience, according to the index.
