Tractor-trailer crashes on I-86, left hanging off overpass in Avoca

AVOCA, N.Y. (WETM) — First responders rescued a tractor-trailer driver after a crash left his cab hanging off of an Interstate 86 overpass in Avoca early on Monday morning.

According to the Avoca Fire Department, a tractor-trailer crashed on the I-86 flyover to I-390 at about 3:53 a.m. on March 4. The Avoca Fire Department was the first on the scene and immediately called for mutual aid. The Kanona Volunteer Fire Department assisted with traffic control, Fleetpride stabilized the tractor-trailer, and the Bath Volunteer Fire Department took over rescue efforts.

The Bath Volunteer Fire Department executed a two-pronged rescue; members of the Bath Rope Rescue team worked from above, and the Truck 5 crew worked from below. According to the Bath Fire Department, the driver removed himself from the cab and got onto Truck 5’s aerial platform. The driver was brought to the highway, and then he was taken to the Bath VA via ambulance.

The Avoca Fire Department and the Cohocton Fire Department also responded to a crash caused by another tractor-trailer hitting debris from the first crash. Diesel fuel spilled over the roadway after the second crash, and T&R Environmental cleaned up the scene.
