Track and field: Clovis North’s McKay Madsen a double state champion, plus other placers

Clovis North standout McKay Madsen set his mark at the CIF track and field state championships on Saturday night.

The junior is a double state champion, winning the discus and then the shot put at Veterans Memorial Stadium at Buchanan High in Clovis.

And who presented Madsen with his first-place medal? His mother, school board trustee Tiffany Stoker Madsen, who is a former Miss California

“I was really focused on the discus coming in, and the shot put was like icing on the cake,” he said. “I just wanted to win some points.”

Madsen’s throw in the discus was 206-08 and his distance in the shot put was 62 9 1/2.

Madsen beat out teammate senior Brayden Bitter, who placed second in the shot put.

“He’s my idol,” Madsen said. “He’s going to Fullerton and he’s going to do well.”

Clovis North boys finished second with 28 points, behind Poly Long Beach (33).

Derek Smith of Buchanan, meanwhile, was second in the discus with a throw of 198-03. Julian Ramirez of Dinuba was fifth in the discus (182-01).

Not before a trip that might’ve cost him a first-place finish.

Nonetheless, he’s still happy with his performance with a time of 13.77. He finished behind Myles McFarland of Cosumnes Oaks (13.69).

“We were tied and after the last hurdle I tried to lean but I lost my balance,” he said. “That’s track.”
