Toy Story becomes the 1st series to win the animation Oscar twice

Toy Story has got a friend in the Academy.

The Best Animated Feature Oscar on Sunday went to Toy Story 4, meaning Pixar's series is the first to win in that category more than once, Gold Derby notes.

Since its introduction in 2002, the Best Animated Feature Oscar has almost always favored original films over sequels, with Toy Story 3 in 2011 becoming the first sequel to win. Almost a decade later, Toy Story 4 has become the second sequel to take the prize, giving the Toy Story series another Oscar. Seeing as this Oscar category was introduced after Toy Story 2, the series has won the prize every time it's been able to.

Despite the Academy tending to back Disney's film for Best Animated Feature, this win was actually not a slam dunk after Missing Link surprisingly defeated Toy Story 4 at the Golden Globes, and Klaus defeated it at the Annie Awards and the British Academy Film Awards. But the film was still able to triumph as Oscar voters decide that unlike Forky, Toy Story 4 is not trash.
