Torture/Kidnap/Murder trial in Elmira; day four

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) — The Chemung County torture/kidnap/murder case continued on Thursday, February 29, as accused killer Eddie Marte appeared in court for his fourth day of trial.

Four witnesses, including a Pennsylvania State Trooper, testified against Marte on Thursday. He is accused of torturing, then killing, Juan Jose Gotay in January of 2021.

According to the State Trooper, Gotay’s body was found just north of Route 6 near Ulysses, Pennsylvania. Witnesses say Gotay was beaten, and his face was bruised. Gotay’s body was in such bad shape an autopsy was needed to confirm his identity.

Another witness testified that he had told two men to do “whatever they wanted” with Gotay, and he added, “just don’t do it in front of me.”

Additionally, another witness testifying against Marte stated that he saw the accused killer with a handgun after witnessing a person tied up on the floor, with two others punching and kicking the person.

Another witness testified she found blood in the kitchen of her home after Gotay and others had been there on the day of the killing. She also testified that she had taken methamphetamine that day.

Prosecutors said at the start of the trial they expect to call more than 40 witnesses.
