Police are warning that yet another planned youth “takeover” at a local mall could be in the works for Saturday.
In a statement posted on social media, the Torrance Police Department said youth from around Los Angeles County are planning to take over the Del Amo Fashion Center on Saturday.
Police Chief Jay Hart pointed toward last week’s gathering at The Pike Outlets in Long Beach, where about 200 young people gathered for a planned fight between two females. A boy was shot nearby, though he is expected to recover.
Hart said Torrance police are being proactive to prevent similar outcomes on Saturday.
“We remain committed, in partnership with Del Amo Fashion Center leadership, to providing a safe experience for all visitors,” he said. “We will not accept criminal behavior, and our Department will have zero tolerance for those who come to our community and cause harm.”
Del Amo introduced a controversial chaperone policy earlier this month. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult aged 21 or older at all times after 3 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. One adult can accompany up to four minors.
That policy came as a response to an incident in December when as many as 1,000 juveniles gathered at Del Amo, causing police in riot gear to respond. Officers made five arrests.
Torrance police said on Friday that road closures may be necessary if the gathering becomes large enough on Saturday.

The UK's data protection watchdog has closed an almost year-long investigation of Snap's AI chatbot, My AI -- saying it's satisfied the social media firm has addressed concerns about risks to children's privacy. At the same time, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) issued a general warning to industry to be proactive about assessing risks to people's rights before bringing generative AI tools to market. GenAI refers to a flavor of AI that often foregrounds content creation.
Generative AI makes stuff up. Rick Caccia, the CEO of WitnessAI, believes it can. "Securing AI models is a real problem, and it’s one that's especially shiny for AI researchers, but it’s different from securing use," Caccia, formerly SVP of marketing at Palo Alto Networks, told TechCrunch in an interview.

It’s been three years since Spotify acquired live audio startup Betty Labs, and yet the music streaming service isn’t leveraging the technology to its fullest potential—at least not in our opinion. Betty Labs-owned Locker Room launched in 2020 as a sports-focused social audio app where sports fans could engage in live conversations, create watch parties, and react to games in real-time. When Spotify bought the app, it rebranded it as Greenroom, a Clubhouse clone that catered to all types of fans, whether they’re interested in sports, fantasy football, music, and other topics.
Build is Microsoft's largest developer conference and of course, it's all about AI this year. As the name suggests, Copilot Extensions allow developers to extend Copilot with third-party skills. "Our goal: make GitHub Copilot the most integrated, powerful, intelligent AI platform there is—with unlimited possibilities to accelerate human progress," said GitHub's SVP of Product Mario Rodriguez.
