Toronto woman wins $40 million Lotto Max jackpot, first thought it was $40,000

Maria Carreiro, a 51-year-old Toronto grandmother, was shocked to discover the winning Lotto Max ticket in her pocket was worth a staggering $40 million dollars after mistakenly thinking it was only $40,000.

TORONTO - A Toronto woman thought she had won a tidy $40,000 in the April 5 Lotto Max draw, but when she got back home from the store her daughter checked on the Internet and told her it was really $40 million.

Maria Carreiro says she ran down the street "like a crazy woman" and checked the ticket at her local store again.

Sure enough, all those zeros meant the 51-year-old grandmother indeed had won $40 million.

Carreiro ran back home and said she needed a glass of water.

She and her daughter were still jumping up and down with excitement as they picked up her cheque today at the Ontario Lottery and Gaming office in Toronto.

She says that among other things, after 30 years of marriage she is finally going on her dream Hawaiian honeymoon.
