Tornado shelters in Desoto and Shelby counties

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Desoto County Emergency Services announced that several tornado shelters will be opening ahead of severe weather expected to roll into the Mid-South Wednesday night.

Those who do not feel comfortable sheltering inside their home should take action before a tornado warning is issued. You should not drive to a shelter at the issuance of a warning.

If you do decide to shelter in your home, find a safe place in the innermost portion of the first floor of the home or business that is away from windows.

Desoto County Emergency Services says that they are expecting a tornado watch to be issued by 9 p.m. or sooner. They say that in the event a watch is issued before 8 p.m., the shelters with an 8 p.m. opening time will open as soon as possible.

  • Hernando Elementary – 455 Riley Street, Hernando, MS. 38632 (Opening at 6:30 p.m.)

  • Horn Lake Elementary – 6341 Ridgewood, Horn Lake, MS. 38637 (Opening at 8 p.m.)

  • Hope Sullivan Elementary – 7985 Southaven Circle West, Southaven, MS. 38671 (Opening at 8 p.m.)

  • Lewisburg Elementary – 1717 Craft Road, Olive Branch, MS. 38654 (Opening at 8 p.m.)

  • Walls Elementary – 6131 Delta View Rd. Walls, MS. 38680 (Opening at 8 p.m.)

  • Olive Branch Elementary – 9549 Pigeon Roost Olive Branch, MS. (Opening at 8 p.m.)

According to the Emergency Management Agency in Shelby County, only one tornado shelter will be available for the county.
