Tornadoes confirmed: EF-1 in Colbert County, EF-0 in Limestone County

COLBERT COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — The National Weather Service (NWS) office in Huntsville surveyed damage and confirmed two tornadoes on Tuesday – an EF-1 in Colbert County and an EF-0 in Limestone County.

In Colbert County, the NWS had damage reported on County Line Road, Puller Loop, Crocket Road and Gunpowder Lane.

On Wednesday afternoon, it confirmed a tornado just north of Leighton based on the tree fall pattern and lofted debris. The NWS said an EF-1 tornado came through that area.

That EF1 tornado produced peak winds of 90 mph along just over a three-mile-long damage path. The most damage was concentrated in the area of County Line Road and Puller Loop Road.

The NWS confirmed the tornado touched down in a field at 4:58 p.m. and then tracked northeast before lifting just after 5 p.m.

Damage reported after storms move through Tennessee Valley

A home on Puller Loop reportedly had a tree fall on it with possible entrapment.

Two homes were complete losses, and 10-15 others sustained minor damages in the area of County Line Road and Puller Loop, according to Colbert County’s Deputy EMA Director Jody Hitt. The Red Cross will assist the affected homeowners.

Leighton Baptist Church opened its fellowship hall, and several churches in the area are coming together to provide food and other necessities.

NWS also surveyed damage in Limestone County, confirming an EF-0 tornado.

That EF0 tornado had produced peak winds of 85 mph leading to roof damage on a detached garage.

The tornado touched down around 6:01 p.m. leading to just over a mile-long damage path before lifting around 6:04 p.m.

News 19 saw multiple reports of damage in Athens including several trees down.

An Athens City Spokesperson said that Elm Street near Elkton Street was shut down for part of Tuesday afternoon due to a downed tree.

One location with damage was the Catfish Cabin on Old Highway 72, a popular restaurant in town. News 19’s Lynsey Smith said the building did not appear to have any damage but the restaurant’s sign was damaged in the storms.
