Topeka Docking Building needs mold remediation

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Following cold temperatures and stormy weather, an area of the Topeka Docking Building started to show signs of mold growth. Now a team is scheduled to remediate the problem.

In January 2024, rainy cold weather created an environment in the Docking Building basement for mold growth. The areas that were impacted were cleaned and dried. Later in mid-March, non-toxic mold growth was found in an unoccupied area, according to Docking Building construction contractor Hutton.

A team of licensed professionals was hired to treat the moldy areas. The mitigation was completed in April of 2024, according to Hutton.

Hutton spokeswoman Jennifer Szambecki said an area of the building started to show signs of mold growth after the recent storms. She said professional mold mitigation work will be done next week.

“Once we are completely enclosed, we plan to confirm the absence of mold via air testing and proceed to complete planned renovations in the basement spaces,” Szambecki said. “Left unattended, mold can progress to a health hazard for occupants. In this case, quick action by the construction team eliminated that potential.”
