Top 10 best-selling cars in April 2016

Ninad Ambre

The sales reports from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) for April 2016 are here. These have given us an idea of the passenger vehicle sales, eventually reflecting the Indian consumer’s sentiments as well. Maruti Suzuki’s dominance continues in the Indian market. So there isn’t much of hustle-bustle in this list of 10 best-selling cars in the last month, save for some reshuffling. Take a look.

1.Maruti Suzuki Alto 16,583 units

The Alto has unquestionably been the top-selling hatchback in the country and still continues to retain its number one position. However, the sales of the car have declined considerably. To be precise 23 per cent in comparison to its sales performance last year. Why? The car at Number 7 might be one reason, we will get to it later.

2.Maruti Suzuki Swift 15,661 units

This B-segment king has been ruling this territory for more than a decade now. The Swift dominates unscathed and this time, in fact, has moved forward two places. And, this is despite the 15 per cent drop in its sales last month as over a year ago. Has its other sibling - the Baleno - eaten into its sales?

3.Maruti Suzuki WagonR 15,323 units

Untouched by all the perils in the automotive industry, the WagonR has shown a 10 per cent growth in its April 2016 sales as against in the same month last year. The tall-boy avatar still has a good demand in our country.

4.Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire 13,256 units

The slump in sales of the Dzire has pushed this compact sedan two spots down from its number two position earlier. The 20 per cent decline in its sales can be attributed to the diesel taxis ban in Delhi-NCR, which surely has given a huge blow to the demand from fleet operators.

5.Hyundai Elite i20 11,147 units

The Elite i20 could not be easily overtaken by its main rival, the Baleno, despite the 10.3 per cent drop in the Korean car’s sales. Thankfully, Hyundai managed to sell more i20s in April than March and the number was good enough to race ahead of the Baleno.

6.Hyundai Grand i10 9,840 units

The Grandi10 has maintained its spot with a 12 per cent hike in its sales last month. The hatchback has achieved many milestones for the Korean carmaker and continues to maintain its growth at a steady pace.

7.Renault Kwid 9,795 units

The Kwid deserves an applause for doing what no other car could do till date - cause a dent to the sales of the Alto! The small entry-level hatchback has been well-accepted by the Indian consumers and dislodged a few cars to make it to this list.

8.Maruti Suzuki Baleno 9,562 units

Maruti’s premium hatchback has entered this list from its 11th rank in March 2016. A 36 per cent growth in its sales has helped achieve this huge success.

9.Maruti Suzuki Celerio 8,548 units

The demand of the premium hatchbacks was noticeably more than the Celerio’s demand, making it lose one spot this time. Nevertheless, the sales graph for the Celerio points upwards. A 61 per cent boost to the hatchback’s sales is surely due to the introduction of the AMT variants.

10.Maruti Suzuki Omni 8, 356 units

The Omni has always surprised us with its huge sales numbers. This time as well it has raked in big numbers for the carmaker pushing the Creta out of the list and leaving no chance for the Vitara Brezza to even enter this list.
