Tony Romo will compete in a PGA Tour event
Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo seems to be pretty good at the things he does. Not only was he an excellent quarterback, but he transitioned smoothly to the broadcast booth following his playing career.
Apparently, football has gotten too easy for Romo. Now, he’s going to try his hand at a new sport. Romo is going to play in an actual PGA Tour event. The 37-year-old will take some golf swings in the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship, which begins March 19.
The event will carry a $3 million purse, and will be broadcast on the Golf Channel in case you’re interested in seeing what Romo can do.
He told PGATour.com that being able to play in a PGA Tour event is “a dream come true.”
“As a professional athlete, the love and thrill of competition never entirely leaves you,” said Romo. “Outside of my family and football, golf is one of my greatest passions. So, playing and competing in a PGA TOUR event is a dream come true. I am grateful to the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship for giving me an incredible opportunity to test my skills against some of the best on TOUR.”
In order to play in the event, Romo had to receive a sponsor exemption. Basically, he was selected by the sponsor to participate even though he’s not a pro. That was a surprise to some, but not Romo’s broadcast partner Jim Nantz. Nantz told Golf.com he expected Romo to receive a sponsor exemption to a PGA Tour event in two months. He made that prediction in January.
Romo is an avid golfer, and has tried to qualify for the U.S. Open three times.
After joining the Cowboys as an unsigned free-agent, Romo proved a lot of people wrong by going on to have an exceptional career. He might have another chance to prove a lot of the doubters wrong once again when he tees up for his first PGA Tour event.
