Tony Nominations Snub Hollywood Star Power — Except for Tom Hanks

Hollywood be damned: The Tony Awards are now a race between a magical little girl who likes to read and a drag queen who helps save a shoe factory. Two musicals, Kinky Boots and Matilda the Musical, led the nominations—Broadway's biggest, which were announced this morning—with 13 and 12 nominations, respectively. On the play side of things, many movie stars who appeared on the stage this year were shut out, but one particularly big one, Tom Hanks, was nominated for his performance as journalist Mike McAlary in Nora Ephron's posthumously produced Lucky Guy. Movie stars who took to the stage and didn't make the cut include: Sigourney Weaver, who was one of only two members of the cast of Christopher Durang's Chekhov-inspired farce Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike not to get nominated; and Alec Baldwin, who's costar in Orphans, Tom Sturridge, did snag a nomination. Even Bette Midler, who won good reviews for her one woman show I'll Eat You Last, didn't get an honor.

Matilda would have caught up to Kinky Boots in terms of number of nominations had the four little girls playing the title role not been ruled ineligible for the best actress prize as the New York Times reported. The girls will instead get a special award: "Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theater." So which one has the best chance of taking home the big prize? Patrick Healy of the Times gives it to Matilda, which "has the sort of critical acclaim and pedigree (a Royal Shakespeare Theater production; the winner of a record seven Olivier Awards, London’s version of the Tonys) that tend to appeal to Tony voters." Healy also draws attention to arguably the most competitive category: Best Actress in a Play.

The nominations were announced by two current television stars with Broadway histories: Sutton Foster and Jesse Tyler Ferguson. Here are the key prizes up for grabs:
