Tony Hawk’s Amazing Cardboard Skateboard — And More Rideable Cardboard Prototypes

Cardboard is cheap, dependable, and so reusable and recyclable that most boxes used today are made from a minimum of 35 percent recycled fiber.

But it isn’t exactly the first material that comes to mind when you’re making something you can actually ride. Do you want to roll down a hill on something basically made of paper?

That’s why it’s amazing to see pro skater Tony Hawk out-and-out shredding on a cardboard skateboard prototype, without snapping it in half. He’s not being gentle, just watch.

The paper skateboard is the latest creation from cardboard maker Ernest Packaging collaboration with board-makers Signal Snowboards for a YouTube series called “Cardboard Chaos.” (Together they’ve also made and tested a cardboard surfboard and a cardboard snowboard.) And yes, the video featuring Tony Hawk IS clearly made to go viral and offer exposure for the brands (and it has!)…but that doesn’t mean the work isn’t just cool.

Check out the fascinating process of how the cardboard skateboard was made —it involves multiple thin layers of cardboard, resin, and a vacuum sealing process—alongside four other impressive cardboard designs you’d never expect you can ride.
