Tony Finau named to U.S. Ryder Cup team with final captain's pick
U.S. Ryder Cup team captain Jim Furyk made his final decision on Monday — one that many had seen coming.
Furyk used his fourth and final captain’s pick to add Finau to the Ryder Cup team on Monday, shortly after the conclusion of the rain-delayed BMW Championship. Finau will join Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods and Bryson DeChambeau on the team, who were the other three captain’s picks that were announced last week.
And after the year Finau had, it’s easy to see why Furyk picked him up. The 28-year-old finished tied for eighth on Monday at the BMW Championship, his third-straight top-10 finish in the last three FedExCup Playoffs events. While he hasn’t won yet this season, Finau has posted three runner-up finishes — including at The Northern Trust two weeks ago.
He’s currently ranked No. 15 in the official world golf rankings and third in the FedExCup standings.
“He has an unbelievable body of work this year,” Furyk said. “All those top-10 finishes, the play in big championships and the majors, and then his current form, a second, a fourth and an eighth in the playoffs. He checked a lot of boxes and made it impossible not to pick him.”
Finau, Mickelson, Woods and DeChambeau will join automatic qualifiers Rickie Fowler, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Patrick Reed, Webb Simpson, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and Bubba Watson to complete the team.
Nearly the entirety of Team USA has qualified for the PGA Tour Championship next week at East Lake. Spieth is the lone member who failed to qualify, falling one spot short in the FedExCup standings.
Team Europe captain Thomas Bjorn finished his captain’s picks, too, selecting Paul Casey, Sergio Garcia, Ian Poulter and Henrik Stenson. They will join automatic qualifiers Tommy Fleetwood, Tyrell Hatton, Rory McIlroy, Francesco Molinari, Alex Noren, Thorbjorn Olesen, Jon Rahm and Justin Rose.
The Ryder Cup pits 12 of the best golfers from the United States and 12 of the best from Europe against each other in match play competition every two years. The three-day event will take place Sept. 28-30 at Le Golf National in Paris.
