Tony Awards: ‘Frozen’ Eligible For Original Score; Other Decisions Announced

Broadway’s Frozen will be Tony Award-eligible for Best Original Score despite a portion of it – and “Let It Go”, of course – coming from the movie.

That eligibility determination was one of seven made today by the Tony Awards Administration Committee. Other decisions include Frozen actresses Caissie Levy and Patti Murin both eligible in the leading role category, and Andrew Garfield eligible as a Leading Actor among the large cast of Angels in America.

Many of the determinations involve leading vs. featured categories: Both Laurie Metcalf and Alison Pill of Three Tall Women are eligible in featured, presumably leaving the lead spot to Glenda Jackson.

In the choreography category, Finn Caldwell, Steven Hoggett and Robby Graham will be considered jointly for Angels in America. Hoggett and Graham are credited with “movement” for the play, while Caldwell is credited as puppetry director (the Angel, unlike most productions of the play, does not descend on wires but rather via War Horse-style puppetry).

John Lithgow’s one-man show Stories By Heart, a shorter version of which was staged at Lincoln Center Theater in 2008, is eligible as Best Play.

Today was the committee’s third of four scheduled eligibility meetings for the 2017-2018 season. The 72nd annual Tony Awards are set for June 10.

Here is the full list of determinations made today:

  • John Lithgow: Stories by Heart will be considered eligible in the Best Play category.

  • Paul Alexander Nolan and Alison Luff will be considered eligible in the Best Performance by an Actor/Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical categories for their respective performances in Escape to Margaritaville.

  • The score of Frozen (music and lyrics by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez) will be considered eligible in the category of Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre.

  • Caissie Levy and Patti Murin will be considered eligible in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role category for their performances in Frozen.

  • Christopher Oram and Finn Ross will be considered eligible in the Best Scenic Design of a Musical category for their work on Frozen.

  • Andrew Garfield will be considered eligible in the Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play category for his performance in Angels in America.

  • Ian MacNeil and Edward Pierce will be considered jointly eligible in the Best Scenic Design of a Play category for their work on Angels in America.

  • Finn Caldwell, Steven Hoggett and Robby Graham will be considered jointly eligible in the Best Choreography category for their work on Angels in America.

  • Laurie Metcalf and Alison Pill will be considered eligible in the Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play category for their respective performances in Edward Albee’s Three Tall Women.

  • 1984 will be considered eligible in the Best Play category.

  • Tom Sturridge will be considered eligible in the Best Performance by a Leading Actor in Play category for his performance in 1984.

The official eligibility cut-off date for award consideration will be Thursday, April 26, with nominations to be announced on Tuesday, May 1.
