Tom Hanks’s cameo on 'Last Week Tonight' that you probably missed

John Oliver ended the season finale of Last Week Tonight in normal fashion: with a bunch of mascots dancing around. But without announcing it in any way, after the closing credits, the show aired a filmed segment that featured Tom Hanks and a wax figure of President Warren G. Harding.

In the segment, Hanks walks into a room and solemnly says, “Sir, the world is in trouble. We need you. The fate of humanity itself is at stake. Will you help us, Mr. President?”

From behind a desk, a chair turns around to reveal a grotesque wax figure of President Warren G. Harding. Hanks then asks for help from others, one by one, four other presidential figures awkwardly pop out. Hanks concludes, “Gentlemen, let’s go wax these bastards.”

Last Week Tonight bought the unfortunate-looking figures from a failing museum, and in July, justified the $13,700 purchase with a biopic trailer about Harding starring James Cromwell, Anna Kendrick, Michael McKean, and Laura Linney. Though that trailer was showcased during the show. Hank’s teaser trailer-esque segment was oddly postponed (or hidden) in a slot that ran after the credits.
