Tom Flacco, brother of Joe Flacco, reportedly transferring to Rutgers
Tom Flacco is reportedly returning to New Jersey.
Flacco, the younger brother of Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco, has chosen Rutgers as his transfer destination after deciding to leave Western Michigan. If the transfer comes to fruition, the Voorhees, New Jersey, native will have two years of eligibility remaining after sitting out in 2017.
The news was first reported by the capital “J” journalists over at “Pardon My Take.”
With Zach Terrell entrenched at quarterback, Flacco was used mostly as a running threat at WMU. Flacco completed 10-of-13 passes for 188 yards and a touchdown, but attempted just one pass in 2016. On the ground, Flacco totaled 340 yards and two touchdowns on 38 carries. After Terrell graduated, Flacco was battling redshirt sophomore Jon Wassink for the starting role, but Flacco opted to transfer instead.
According to NJ.com, Flacco will arrive at Rutgers as a walk-on. Once he’s eligible in 2018, Flacco will join Giovanni Rescigno, who will be a fifth-year senior, and Johnathan Lewis on the quarterback depth chart. Rutgers also has two quarterbacks committed in its 2018 class.
Flacco is the tenth transfer player Rutgers has added since the end of Chris Ash’s first season, when the Scarlet Knights went 2-10 without a conference win. Ash said at Big Ten Media Days this week that the transfers have increased the level of competition on the roster.
“I think we’ve brought in nine transfers here recently. Really what we wanted to get from the transfers is competition. We wanted to bring in some guys that have come from four-year programs. They’ve gone through strength and conditioning programs and offseason workouts and training camps,” Ash said Tuesday.
“A lot have had successful experiences from the places that they’ve been at and they’ve provided tremendous competition, renewed energy, excitement as we go into training camp. And those battles for positions are going to be really exciting to watch with those guys being part of our team.”
One of those transfers, Kyle Bolin, is the team’s expected starter at quarterback. Bolin is a graduate transfer from Louisville who fell behind Heisman-winner Lamar Jackson on the Cardinals’ depth chart.
Rutgers opens its season against Washington on Sept. 1.
