Tolls begin Friday on the Gateway Expressway in Pinellas County

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The free ride is over for drivers the Gateway Expressway. After days of toll-free access, those wanting to breeze past traffic on Interstate 275 will have to pay up.

The $595 million project, which broke ground in 2017, opened to motorists a week before tolls were implemented Friday.

The express lanes have two elevated spans that connect I-275 to U.S. Highway 19 and the Bayside Bridge. The lanes run along the median beginning just south of Gandy Boulevard. They end at 4th Street North at the Howard Frankland Bridge, where road crews are working on extending the express lanes.

Tolls run between 28 and 86 cents, depending on how far you’re travelling.

Drivers must pay the tolls using either SunPass or toll-by-plate, which tacks on a $2.50 administrative fee.
