“Unbeknownst to her, the 16-month-old child walked in front of the vehicle as [the grandmother] drove out of the driveway and was struck by the Toyota,” CHP said.

The child was airlifted to Sutter Roseville Medical Center, but was later declared dead by medical staff and first responders.

“This incident is still under investigation, and there is no suspicion of alcohol or drug use,” CHP said.

The agency continued, “The child’s heartbreaking death has hit all of us very hard, and we share in the family’s grief. Please be respectful of the family’s privacy during this time.”
