A Todd Haley tempest is coming to revitalize the Cleveland Browns woeful offense

The Cleveland Browns appear to be on the verge of hiring beleaguered offensive guru and human tempest Todd Haley, according to Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot.

Haley was driven out of Pittsburgh last week, following the Steelers’ upset in the AFC divisional round against the Jacksonville Jaguars. By remaining within the division, he’ll have an opportunity to make the Steelers regret tossing him to the wind (kind of like this guy).

In his previous stops as an offensive coordinator, Haley has consistently constructed prolific offenses. Even in his Steelers finale, Pittsburgh hung 42 points on the NFL’s second-ranked defense. Unfortunately, his career has been hampered by his temper. Haley is a hit in the X’s and O’s department, but misses the mark in his communication with players and personnel.

He was the offensive mastermind overseeing the Arizona Cardinals Super Bowl XLIII offense. His three seasons as the Kansas City Chiefs head coach ended as he created enemies within the organization, burnished his reputation for being difficult to play for and privately warred with general manager Scott Pioli.

Over the final four years of his Steelers tenure, the Steelers were second in scoring to only the New England Patriots. He also butted heads with Roethlisberger, both publicly and privately. On his way out the door, Roethlisberger panned Haley for not giving him the authority to check into a sneak on a critical fourth-and-1 in the fourth quarter of their Jaguars loss.

Haley may benefit from working with a more subservient, younger quarterback whom he can mold. Instead of creating a scheme around the triumvirate of Ben Roethlisberger, Le’Veon Bell and Antonio Brown, he’ll face a much more daunting task in Cleveland. The Browns will likely be grooming a rookie quarterback, a rookie running back and may find themselves attempting to replace future Hall of Fame left tackle Joe Thomas in 2018.

Cleveland’s 32nd-ranked offense could use a kick in the pants and Haley isn’t afraid to provide it. His success is only a matter of his coaching acumen weighed against his temper and disputes with players. Haley is a control freak and a young team may be a perfect landing for him.

Haley’s imprint will be all over the Browns’ remodeled offense as he’ll also assume play-calling duties from head coach Hue Jackson. Unless the Browns are gluttons for punishment, this all but closes the door on Cleveland targeting equally stubborn UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen.
