'Today' Could Dip Into Recent Past of Couric, Vieira for Short-Term Replacement
Morning viewers of the Today Show could be hit with severe déjà vu in the coming weeks.
With regular host Savannah Guthrie set to take maternity leave, the Today show has informally considered two former hosts of the morning show, Katie Couric and Meredith Vieira, about potentially taking over short-term hosting duties, sources tell the New York Daily News and the New York Post.
Couric, who spent 15 years hosting the show from 1991 to 2006 before leaving to CBS Evening News, would be the most exciting name for a temporary gig thanks to her long career on the show. "It makes perfect sense," an NBC News staffer told the Daily News. "The viewers loved her and Matt Lauer together. This would be a chance to give them exactly what they want." Vieira, who succeeded Couric on Today from 2006-11, is being casually considered as well.
Any temporary deal is still a ways away, however, as the Post describes the conversations as "friendly talks" rather than negotiations. Guthrie announced she was pregnant in March.
