'Tired' motorist was three times drink-drive limit
A man who was three times the drink-drive limit when police stopped him told officers he was tired.
Peteris Veigurs was spotted in the Millfield area of Peterborough on 19 March driving with no lights on.
Officers followed the 30-year-old's black Chevrolet on Lincoln Road.
As they followed Veigurs turned his lights on but he then swerved between lanes and "nearly crashed into safety barriers".
He told officers his driving was due to tiredness but when he was breathalysed he returned 105mg per 100ml of blood - three times the legal limit of 35mg.
He was charged with drink driving, driving without insurance and driving without a licence.
Veigurs appeared at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday (17 April), where he admitted the offences.
He was sentenced to a 12-month community order and will have to complete 120 hours of unpaid work.
He was banned from driving for two years and two months.
PC Leo Clarke said: “Driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol is incredibly dangerous and can put both the driver and other motorists or pedestrians in danger and it was very fortunate that this did not happen on this occasion."
