Tire amnesty event in Jefferson today

May 11—JEFFERSON — Anyone seeking to dispose of old tires can do so today at the Ashtabula County Fairgrounds, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., as part of the county's annual tire amnesty day.

Attendees must show proof of residency in Ashtabula County, according to information about the event provided by the Ashtabula County Department of Planning and Development. County residents can hand over four tires for free, and can dispose of a maximum of 10 tires. However, there is a fee of $1 per tire after the first four.

No oversized tires — over 22 inch rim sizes — will be accepted, nor will any rims.

The event will take place at the county fairgrounds, on the west side of North Poplar Street in Jefferson.

Ashtabula County Commissioner Casey Kozlowski said six to eight thousand tires were turned in at last year's event.

"It's become an annual tradition, that we host the tire event in the spring," he said. "We always pull in a ton of tires."

If tires are not disposed of properly, they can end up in any number of places, Kozlowski said.

"We've become aware of situations where they've ended up in Lake Erie, they're tossed on the side of roads, et cetera," he said. "Obviously, that is not appropriate, and we want folks to take advantage of events like this to dispose of them properly."

He emphasized that no rims are accepted.

The event is paid for by the county Solid Waste District, Kozlowski said.
