Tips for spring, summer lawn maintenance
TYLER, Texas (KETK) – Spring is almost here, along with the return of maintaining your lawn and the costs that come with it.

KETK met with Serrano Irrigation to learn about basic maintenance and devices to help keep the water bill at a manageable rate.
“Pressure regulator heads, at the end of the day they end up paying for themselves so you might get a high bill whenever you initially get your sprinklers started up but in the long run it saves you a lot of money,” said Serrano.
Serrano suggested paying attention to the weather like watering when the sun’s not out. Technology can also help there are now different apps to monitor your yard from your phone.
“If you’re not home it automatically does adjustments for you. It adjusts the time that it turns on, how long it waters for,” said Serrano.
He explained that once your system is running, it’s common to have leaks so be on the watch for dry patches.
“Our sprinkler heads have check valves so the water doesn’t come out the sprinkler heads once the system is off, and that holds water so if you don’t get that checked before the winter as well as after we can have leaks,” said Serrano.

Of course if East Texas gets one more cold snap, do your normal low-temperature preparations.
“Turn off your backflow, turn off your sprinkler system sometimes we have exposed backflow preventers, and you can wrap those up with insulation,” said Serrano.
According to the Water Texas Coalition, overwatering is a big issue in our state. So, if you don’t have a water sensor and a system timer, it might be time to get those.
