Fashion tips to take from your favourite British style icons

In the midst of London Fashion Week, why not take notes from some perennial British style icons?  Allow Alexa, Kate, Kristin, Victoria and Sienna to show you how it's done. From after-dark denim to tonal tailoring: let the Brit parade lead the way.

Kate’s rock’n’roll chic

Our favourite vintage queen is rarely without her signature splash of leopard print. Punchy animal prints are a quick and easy way to jazz up your neutral pieces, so if you have a penchant for black (like our Kate) then you're in luck. Make like Kate and layer an animal-print jacket over knitwear, and finish with a navy fedora (more flattering against the face than black). Done.

Get Kate's look: Car sweater, £475, Coach; navy fedora, £45, Mint Velvet; Sister Jane leopard print jacket, £89, La Redoute, studded ankle boots, £85, Topshop

Alexa’s polished perfection

We doubt there’s anything Ms Chung doesn’t look fabulous in. But she does a blazer-jeans-heels combo for evening especially nicely.

Gone are the days when wearing denim at night was considered a fashion faux pas.  Dress your jeans up with a tailored jacket and heels, and add a sparkly clutch.

Get Alexa's look: Ecru twill blazer, £139, Massimo Dutti; Cornel suede pump, £140, Whistles; mid rise cropped flare jean, £25, Marks & Spencer; monogram black clutch, £65, I Know The Queen

Kristin’s smart move

Feminine tailoring is Kristin’s USP. She often opts for sleek pieces that have a soft edge - think sumptuous wrap coats, and structured pleated skirts.

The style lesson here? Red and pink really are a match made in heaven. If you're new to colour clashing, then ease yourself into the idea with accessories (try a red scarf with a pink coat, or pink socks with red trousers).

Get Kristin's look: Wool and angora coat, £655, MaxMara; pleated skirt, £24.99, H&M ; wool blend scarf, £22.50, Marks & Spencer; Valentino rockstud leather pouch, £435, Net-a-porter

VB’s slouchy sophistication

A teeny, tiny part of us misses the days of Victoria Beckham's body-con dresses and sky-high heels, but we love the baggy trousers + silky shirt + sunnies formula she’s adopted. Elevate your paper bag trousers and mannish shirt combo with a mid heel. When it works, it works.

Get VB's look: Tibi wide leg twill trousers, £650, Net-a-porter; casual shirt, £22, Next; snakeskin heeled boots, £13, New Look; Mina Lua cross-body bag, £98, Jigsaw

Sienna's preppy-cool

Once the reining boho queen (and epitome of Glastonbury-chic), Sienna Miller now sways between Hollywood siren (for her regular red carpet appearances) and preppy ensembles with a cool-girl edge (such as this Chloé jumper, white shirt pairing) for everything in between.

Top tip: opt for an oversize V-neck knit to ensure your jumper errs on the right side of school girl.

Get Sienna's look: Sampras V-neck sweater, £170, Blake LDN, suede heel shoes, £115, Uterqüe; Holmewood tie hem trousers, £65, Finery; boxy cotton shirt, £32, Warehouse
