Timing, totals and temperature for spring weekend storm

DENVER (KDVR) — Saturday is a Pinpoint Weather Alert Day due to heavy snow in the mountains and wet conditions in the Denver metro.

Denver might have had its last snowstorm of the season, but the winter weather isn’t over in the mountains.

While the metro will see rain and wet conditions on the road, that precipitation could turn into slush and ice on mountain roads, with some places seeing up to and over a foot of snow, according to Pinpoint Weather Meteorologist Travis Michels.

Timing

In the metro, scattered showers will move in starting Friday afternoon.

In the high country, the snow will start around Friday afternoon as well, and continue through Saturday, according to Michels.

The precipitation will stick around until Sunday, but the majority of the rain and snow will fall on Saturday.

Totals

Scattered showers move through the Front Range this weekend, with the Denver metro seeing the most amount of rain with a total of 1.3 inches by the end of the weekend.

There may be some snow on the Front Range, but likely nothing that sticks to the road in most areas, according to Michels. However, the south and west metro areas could see some accumulation.

The mountain roads will have the most issues, as snow totals could reach up to a foot of snow in some places.

A winter weather advisory and winter storm watch are in effect until Sunday morning.

Here are some areas that will see the most snow:

  • Georgetown: 16 inches

  • Estes Park: 12 inches

  • Conifer: 10 inches

  • Vail: 6 inches

  • Leadville: 6 inches

Meanwhile, Boulder could potentially get an inch of snow, but it should melt. This may impact the University of Colorado Boulder’s spring game.

The Palmer Divide will see slush on the road at most, with a potential light coating on grassy surfaces, said Michels.

If you’re heading to the mountains to hit the slopes one last time before the ski areas close, be careful. Mountain passes could be an issue as the roads will be snowy and may potentially get icy overnight.

Temperature

It’s going to be a wet weekend in the metro and temperatures will be cooler. On Friday night, mild temperatures will hit a low of 42 degrees, keeping the precipitation as rain.

It will warm up minimally on Saturday, with temperatures hitting a high of 50 degrees. By night, it will cool back down again to the high 30s, but temperatures shouldn’t dip below freezing in the city.

Meanwhile, the mountains will be chillier.

Overnight on Friday in the mountains, temperatures should be around 30 degrees. It will warm up during the day on Saturday. The high on Saturday in the mountains should be around 40 to 50 degrees, according to Michels.

The cold weather will stay overnight on Saturday, making for slick roads and snowy accumulation.
