Time to vote for Rockford Register Star Student of the Week for May 27-31

The nominations are in for Rockford Register Star Student of the Week.

This week's finalists include a high-academic achieving student who plans to enroll in the US. Naval Academy; a "star student" active in band, orchestra, and speech; and a third who is on the verge of earning her private pilot's license.

We publish a list of Student of the Week finalists every Monday at rrstar.com and every Tuesday in the Rockford Register Star. Readers can vote online as many times as they wish until 11 a.m. Thursday.

The winner of the online poll is announced at rrstar.com every Friday and in print Sunday in the Rockford Register Star.

Here are this week's finalists.

Sean Beckford, Auburn

According to his nominator, Beckford ranks in the top 10% of his senior class at Auburn High School, where he is a student in the gifted program. Beckford recently received an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy. He intends to pursue a career in computer science and cybersecurity. He is a four-year member of the Junior ROTC program. Outside of school, he is active in his church youth group, soccer league and ministry program. During the summers, he works part-time for a landscaping business.

Zora Cunningham, Freeport

Zora Cunningham, 16, is a sophomore at Freeport High School. She is described by the school as "star student," the kind every teacher wants in their class, as well as a friend to anyone she meets. Cunningham is involved in a variety of activities such as band, orchestra and speech.

Gianna Epperson, Keith

Gianna Epperson

Gianna Epperson, 18, is a senior at Keith Country Day School. She has performed in eight stage productions for the Keith theater program and is a leader in the high school choir. She plays the flute, alto saxophone, violin and piano, and she performs with the Rockford Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Rockford Music Academy. She is an active member of the Model United Nations team, a varsity tennis player and swimmer and a member of the Tri-M Honors Society. Outside of school, Epperson is nearing completion of training for her private pilot's license at the Poplar Grove Flight Training School. She volunteers at Saint Anthony Church. Epperson plans to attend Embry Riddle University in Daytona Beach, Florida, where she will major in aeronautical science.
