Timberwolves players to wear ornate Flip Saunders shoes on night honoring memory of coach

Thursday night is Flip Saunders night in Minnesota, where the Timberwolves will honor the memory of their former coach who died of Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2015.

In addition to unveiling a permanent banner in his honor during their game against the Los Angeles Lakers, the Timberwolves unveiled a lineup of Saunders-inspired shoes that players will wear.

Designed by renowned custom shoe artist Salvador Amezcua, aka Kickstradomis, there is nothing subtle about the elaborate shoes.

Each pair will be auctioned during the game benefiting the Flip Saunders Legacy Fund, the team announced.

Saunders oversaw the most successful run in team history, compiling a 427-392 over 12 seasons in two different stints. He oversaw much of the Kevin Garnett era and helped guide the Timberwolves to eight straight playoff appearances including a trip to the 2004 Western Conference Finals.

He also worked as general manager and president of basketball operations. Saunders was diagnosed with his illness during his second stint as Minnesota’s head coach in 2015.
