Tim Cahill is set to make a sensational return to Championship Millwall in a bid to resurrect his hopes of playing for Australia in the World Cup.

The 38-year-old’s last match for the Lions was the 3-0 FA Cup Final defeat to Manchester United in 2004. He signed for Everton and spent eight years at Goodison Park before joining New York Red Bulls.

The attacker then had spells in China and Australia before he left A-League Melbourne City following a fallout with manager Warren Joyce in December last year.

Cahill is desperate to make a fourth World Cup finals appearance and his chances of making the squad for Russia would be greatly enhanced with regular football.

Reports suggest both Cahill and Millwall are working hard to seal the deal, the club now managed by his former team mate Neil Harris.

A source to the Daily Telegraph: “He will be back at Millwall. Tim has already gone to England. It’s not a done-deal just yet but expect an announcement soon.”

Cahill made 217 appearances for Millwall, scoring 52 goals. He made his Millwall debut on May 2, 1998.

He scored the winning goal in the 2004 FA Cup semi-final against Sunderland at Old Trafford and is Australia’s top scorer of all time with 50 goals from 104 international games.

Cahill could make his second Millwall debut at Leeds on Saturday as the Lions seek a first away win of the season. They are currently seven points above the relegation zone in 16th place.
