'Tiger Woods PGA Tour' video game is no more

If you’re a fan of golf video games, it’s been a pretty fallow few years, ever since EA Sports stopped making its “PGA Tour” franchise — most famously branded with Tiger Woods’ name, but also with Rory McIlroy’s here and there.

The joys of those games were sublime; not only could you play Pebble or Sawgrass wearing a kilt and a mohawk (but Augusta always forced you to dress sensibly, of course), but you could play fantasy courses all over the planet. Alas, they’re about to vanish from the web; EA is pulling the game from servers, and you’ll have to scrap through old used-game bins to find a copy now.

But fear not: the “PGA Tour” lives on in video game form. The Tour and HB Studios have announced that “The Golf Club” video game will include a special PGA Tour mode. Players will have to play their way onto the Web.com Tour, and from there onto the PGA Tour itself. Once there, players can compete for the FedEx Cup. Have at it!

Now the bad news. If you’re expecting the breadth of the old EA games, you’re out of luck. According to the news release, the game will only have six courses: TPC Summerlin, TPC Scottsdale, TPC Sawgrass, TPC Southwind, TPC Deere Run and TPC Boston. So while you can still fire at the Island Green, many of the magnificent jewels of the majors — to say nothing of that little course in East Georgia — aren’t in the mix. Plus, it doesn’t appear that there are yet any player licenses.

We’ll hold off any real judgment until we see the game in action, of course. “The Golf Club 2019” lands in August.
