The former zoo keeper was previously sentenced to 22 years in prison after he was convicted in a case involving animal welfare activist Carole Baskin. Prosecutors at the time said Exotic paid someone $3,000 to travel from Oklahoma to Florida to kill Baskin, according to previous reports.

According to previous reporting, Exotic was indicted by a federal grand jury in 2018 on two counts of murder-for-hire. He was also indicted on 19 counts of wildlife charges, which included the violation of the Endangered Species Act and Lacey Act.

Allegedly, Exotic shot and killed five tigers in October 2017 to make room in cages “for other big cats.” He also allegedly sold tiger cubs to raise money. Exotic was ordered to pay $183,000 to the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals organization.

After the hit Netflix series aired, Exotic announced his presidential bid for the 2024 election.
