Thrifty Bride Serves ‘Garbage Food’ to Her Wedding Guests
Most couples spend a lot of money for their wedding, but Kim and Dan Woolnough went over-the-top to keep it low cost.
The British couple organized their entire wedding for £3,000 (about $4,000) by cutting corners at every turn.
They started by using out-of-date food that was destined to be thrown away for their wedding meal, and the bride wore a secondhand dress from a swap shop that cost just £80 ($105).
U.K. charity ReFuse, who source food from local supermarkets, bakeries, and small businesses that would otherwise have gone in the bin, were responsible for arranging all the food.
Guests dined on tomato and red pepper soup, followed by vegetable curry or pasta and a range of desserts.
In keeping with the waste-not theme of the wedding, left-over food was given to the guests to take home.
Their wedding invitations were made out of 100 percent recycled paper, and the save-the-date notes were emailed to save paper. Even the couple’s rings were made from reused metal by an Etsy seller.
The couple also had furniture made for the wedding from recycled wood, which they gave back to the carpenters afterwards to use again.
The 24-year-old bride said: “Some of our guests thought it was a bit weird that we were having out-of-date food for the wedding breakfast, but everyone said it was really tasty.”
“We didn’t want to waste anything so we had to be quite creative.”
