'The threshold of a new beginning': Bakersfield College celebrates 110th graduation

Letting out whoops of joy, 3,200 Bakersfield College students completed their graduation Friday at Memorial Stadium to the accompaniment of fireworks and applause.

The ceremony featured speeches from student leaders, school board trustees and the college's newly appointed president, Jerry Fliger.

"As you stand on the threshold of a new beginning, I want you to take a moment to reflect on the path that has led you here," Fliger said. "It is the path of education, the path of self-discovery."

The ceremony was the 110th iteration since the college was founded in 1913. Along with students who received associate degrees and a variety of certificates, 17 graduates earned a Baccalaureate of Science in industrial automation.

More than 800 graduates plan to continue their studies at Cal State Bakersfield this fall.
