Three things to watch for in the future for the Buffalo Bills

Since 1999, the last year the Buffalo Bills made the playoffs, every year seems to be a “rebuilding” process. In the last ten years they have had ten different starting quarterbacks, seven head coaches and five general managers. All had been burdened with the same task of getting the Bills to the playoffs and– eventually — the big dance.

Two problems with the Bills are the inconsistency of the front office and the inability to find a franchise quarterback. This season is showing promise with the hiring of Sean McDermott and Brandon Beane.

In the successful franchises of the Patriots, Seahawks, and Packers, they have set an example of what consistency can have for a franchise. With a fresh start all around, it will be interesting to see what this new front office will do if they can stay consistent.

With a focus on drafting defense this year and McDermott being a defensive minded coach, his focus is on rebuilding the defense to achieve the 50+ sacks a year that they were getting before the Rex Ryan era. Reggie Ragland (who Rex Ryan was calling a “force to be reckoned with on the practice field”) should provide the extra help that the backfield needs.

Also, with the drafting of White, he will have a big role to fill as Gilmore has signed with the Patriots. McDermott is also returning to a 4-3 defense which is what the defense was running when they put up 50+ sacks.

Another focus is getting Tyrod and Watkins to perform at the level McDermott knows they can. With Lesean McCoy still on the team we should still see a strong run game. Now with the additions of Zay Jones and Andre Holmes we can also look for a strong passing game this season.

With all that being said, here are three things to watch for during the season and the future.

  1. The “Cold Front” returns

  2. Buffalo’s passing game is now a force to be reckoned with

  3. Consistency in the front office
