Three shot on Canal Street near French Quarter

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Officers with the New Orleans Police Department are investigating a shooting that left three men wounded near the French Quarter on Thursday, May 23.

The NOPD reported three men were shot during a fight in the 800 block of Canal Street around 2 p.m.

“They’re all in stable condition right now. No one is in critical. We are reviewing footage of what occurred. It appeared that there was an altercation and then shots rang out,” NOPD Captain Hans Gauthier said.

They said the men were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

One witness recalls the moment the shots rang out, sharing how surprised he was to hear something like this, especially in the middle of the afternoon.

“We heard all of these shots. I mean multiple shots. It was loud. You would think if it was going to be anything like that, you’d think night. But like you said, you don’t think about in the middle of the day broad daylight like this. You just don’t think about that,” witness Bill Conklin said.

No arrests have been made at this time.

“Extremely surprising. Again, you see the police activity so you don’t know what to expect but seeing the markers in the ground and the bullet casings that’s pretty surprising,” tourist Haywood Spruill said.

With this being the second shooting in just six months at this exact location, NOPD officials say they may look to increase police presence in the area moving forward.

“We are fortunate no one was killed, or any father bystanders were hurt, but as always you know, we don’t consider any violence a fortunate thing. However, I think this is something we will be patrolling more as we get closer to the holiday season,” Gauthier said.
