Three people escape house fire

Jan. 8—HIGH POINT — Firefighters helped three people get out of a burning house early Monday in the eastern part of the city.

The fire happened just after 2 a.m. at a one-story house in the 1100 block of Meadowview Boulevard, between University Parkway and Montlieu Avenue. Thick smoke was billowing from the house when firefighters arrived, the High Point Fire Department said.

Two women were helping an older woman get out of the house, and the first firefighters to arrive assisted, Deputy Chief Jayson Valade said.

"I believe it was a grandmother, daughter and granddaughter," Valade told The High Point Enterprise. "It wasn't a rescue, but they did assist them out."

The three weren't injured, according to the department.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation Monday, but investigators believe it started in a clothes dryer, Valade said.

"This fire went straight up into the attic," he said.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control in about 15 minutes.

The house is salvageable, and Valade estimated the fire caused $25,000 to $50,000 worth of damage.

The local chapter of the American Red Cross is helping the residents find a place to stay.
