Three injured Monday in collision at Burlington Exchange

May 8—A Monday afternoon two-vehicle crash at the Burlington Exchange of the Hoosier Heartland Highway (US 24 and SR 329) left one man with series injuries and two with minor injuries.

Cass County Central Dispatch received a call about the crash at 12:41 p.m. A preliminary investigation by Deputy David Wells found Emilee Scott, 21, of Monticello had been driving a 2011 Chevrolet Cruz eastbound on the distributor ramp of US 24 when she failed to yield to a northbound 2007 Kenworth semi-tractor with an empty grain trailer that was driven by David Chaney, 33, of Camden.

The tractor trailer crossed the southbound lanes and came to rest in the west ditch.

Chaney sustained serious injuries and was transported by Cass County Emergency Medical Services to IU Arnett Hospital in Lafayette. Scott and an 11-month-old passenger sustained minor injuries and were transported by Cass County EMS to Logansport Memorial Hospital.

The investigation, cleanup and vehicle removal lasted approximately two hours.

"The proper use of passenger and child restraint systems definitely reduced the injuries of the passenger car occupants," said Deputy Wells in a press release.

Deputy Chris Jones and Deputy Johnathan Ousley also responded to the scene. Walton Fire, Cass County Fire District 1, Cass County Emergency Medical Services and the Indiana State Police also assisted at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing and alcohol is not considered to be a factor in the crash. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the sheriff's office at 574-753-7800.
