Three children, one woman found dead near river in South Texas; FBI investigating
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Four bodies, including two infants, were found near the Rio Grande over the weekend, the Hildalgo County Sheriff's Office said.
Sheriff Eddie Guerra tweeted about the incident Sunday night, saying deputies were in the area where the Border Patrol found four people dead.
"Bodies appear to be (two infants), a toddler and (a 20-year-old) female," the tweet said.
According to Guerra's tweet, the bodies were found by the water just southeast of Anzalduas Park in the Las Paloma Wildlife Management Area.
The Caller-Times reached out to the sheriff's office on Monday for additional information.
While law enforcement officials don't suspect foul play in the deaths - the four likely died from heat exposure or dehydration - autopsies will be performed to determine the cause of death.
The FBI is leading the investigation because the bodies were discovered on federal land.
That area, which is covered with heavy brush, is often used by immigrants to cross the river. It appears the four were undocumented immigrants, Special Agent Michelle Lee told the Caller-Times.
Lee described that area as a "vast territory of desolate land" that makes it tough for Border Patrol to spot migrants trying to enter the U.S. but also means harsh conditions that "can lead to their demise."
