Three Bennett’s Wallabies introduced at Mill Mountain Zoo

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — The Mill Mountain Zoo is happy to welcome three Bennett’s Wallabies into their new habitat at the zoo.

The new Bennett’s Wallabies are bringing a touch from Down Under to the Star City. They are native to the Easter Coast of Australia, but large populations can be found in Tasmania where they are considered an invasive species. Bennett’s Wallabies are in the same family as kangaroos and wallaroos, called Macropods which means ‘long foot.’ Just like kangaroos, hopping is Bennett’s Wallabies most efficient means of travel where they can reach speeds up to 9 mph.

“The wallabies arrived last week and are setting in well to their new home,” said Mill Mountain Zoo General Curator Julia Franet-Hornbeck. “We look forward to our guests being able to see them up close, learn about them, and share in our excitement.”

Wallabies are not just cute, but they play an important role in ecosystem management and conservation. Considered as invasive species, they are often hunted or trapped for their furs. The zoo’s new habitats for the wallabies hopes to show the delicate balance required for a healthy ecosystem while putting an emphasis on the importance of responsible conservation efforts.

The zoo says this represents the beginning of an exciting expansion at Mill Mountain Zoo.

“The arrival of the wallabies is a pivotal step in our larger vision for Mill Mountain Zoo,” says Niki Voudren, Executive Director at Mill Mountain Zoo. “We believe that connecting people with these remarkable animals will inspire a deeper appreciation for wildlife and foster a sense of responsibility towards preserving our planet.”
