I taught in AZ for 11 years and made 38k. I left because of the pay. Every teacher is required to have at least a bachelor's degree, and I think this is where the problem lies. What is a bachelor's worth per year? The median income of someone with a bachelor's is in the neighborhood of 58k per year. Even at the equivalent school work year of roughly 40 weeks, that number is 47k. Median income for a bachelor's. With a master's degree those numbers go up to 70k and 56k respectively. Taken from the bureau of labor statistics for earners based on educational attainment. 38k after 11 years, I will admit I became resentful. I am glad I left.
Here in CA the State OK'd the Lottery back in early 80's saying that the money would go towards education; hmmm now we have no more Art, Music, and other courses that enrich and enhance a child's education. Yeah, that was a great plan CA.
I was a substitute teacher for awhile (one academic year). I'd never do it again. Teachers have way too much to put up with.
More money doesn't equal better results.
Better pay? Teachers work 9 months a year. Teach the same subjects year after year without needing to gain more knowledge like any other job to receive more pay. It seems as if every other week there is a day off. Have all Holidays off. Get off for bad weather. It sounds like they have it terrible. They have time to protest which means they have money to be off of work!
In the Denver metro area, on average teachers make $59,000. Boulder and Cherry Creek teachers make over $70,000. Littleton $66,000.
Great benefits, and most will get a pension at 90% of their salary.
Teachers should not get another PENNY.
It doesn't go to the kids and sure as heck doesn't improve our education system.
It's all public record. A lot of the money for education go to the pension funds, not the classroom.
Illinois in the making..... Wait until you pay $8500. in property taxes on a 65 yr old 1500 sq ft house. Take a look at administration, they can surely cut!!
I wish I could make $50K and only work 8 months/year.
Why do people take a job knowing full well what the pay is, but then strike later over the pay?
There are some teachers that goes the extra mile and I believe they should get paid, however there are some out there just to collect a paycheck.
Do they factor in their pensions which they can start receiving in their 50s....while the rest of us get no pensions? That's quite a large financial benefit. Or, the three months of vacation they get each summer while the rest of us get 2-5 weeks? Again, quite a nice benefit...
