Thousands of Police Deployed in Berlin Amid Tense Protests

Thousands of police officers were deployed to control a series of demonstrations in Berlin on Saturday, May 7. Far-right groups organized a protest under the banner, “Merkel must go.” The demonstrators had taken issue with what they described as the chancellor’s “open door” immigration policy.

A series of counter-demonstrations also took place, including a “Nazi-free” rally in the German capital.

Deutsche Welle reported that almost 2,000 police officers were deployed to keep control of the demonstrations.
