Thousands lose power in North Jersey and road closures reported amid strong winds

New Jersey and the surrounding areas were placed under a wind advisory from the National Weather Service early Monday morning and power outages were being reported all over the state.

As of 6:15 p.m. on Monday, PSE&G was reporting 4,392 affected customers and JCP&L was reporting 9,570 affected customers statewide. The number of affected customers in North Jersey per PSE&G's power outage map and JCP&L's power outage map were:

  • Bergen: 223 customers affected, 352,704 customers served

  • Passaic: 1,390 customers affected, 190,174 customers served

  • Morris: 3,854 customers affected, 204,968 customers served

  • Sussex: 1,090 customers affected, 58,394 customers served

  • Essex: 2,032 customers affected, 363,951 customers served

Road closures are being reported in Teaneck and Ramsey due to downed trees and wires.

Wind Gusts

The National Weather Service is expecting northwest winds from 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 55 mph throughout the day. The wind advisory, which is in place for New Jersey, Delaware, northeast Maryland, and eastern Pennsylvania, is set to last until 8 p.m. Monday evening.

According to North Jersey Weather Observer's Bob Ziff, here were some the strongest wind gusts in New Jersey on Monday.

  • High Point: 58 mph

  • Vernon: 57 mph

  • Wantage: 46 mph

  • Lyndhurst: 40 mph

  • Haworth: 40 mph

  • Hillsdale: 35 mph (rate when a tree fell onto a property on Riverside Drive)

"Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs or some weaker trees could be blown down and some power outages may result," according to the National Weather Service. "The saturated ground may make it easier for some trees to fall, especially weaker or shallow rooted trees."

The NWS recommends that those in the affected areas use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high-profile vehicle and double check that outdoor objects are secure.
