Thousands gather for funeral of firefighter killed in Sterling house explosion

LEESBURG, Va. (DC News Now) — Firefighters from across the state and in other parts of the country were among the thousands gathering for the funeral of Trevor Brown Monday.

Brown, 45, was a member of the Sterling Volunteer Fire Department. He died in February when a home exploded, killing him, and injuring 13 other people, including 11 first responders.

Investigators determined that an underground propane tank leak was the cause of the explosion.

The service to celebrate Brown’s life and to honor him was scheduled to start at 11 a.m. at Cornerstone Chapel, located at 650 Battlefield Pkwy. SE in Leesburg. The church made a stream available for people who were not able to attend the funeral in person.

Among other relatives, Brown leaves behind a wife and three children.

Loudoun County Fire and Rescue (LCFR), with which Brown was affiliated for a number of years, said it expected members of nearly 50 fire departments and law enforcement agencies to attend the service. People from fire departments across Virginia and Maryland stepped in to backfill stations within Loudoun County so that LCFR members could be at the funeral while making sure that fire service in the community was unaffected.
