Thousands across Greater New Orleans have power knocked out amid severe weather event

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Several thousand people across the Greater New Orleans area went without power Thursday night after severe weather ripped through the region.

Rounds of thunderstorms affected Southeast Louisiana on May 16. Heavy winds and rains left thousands without power overnight.

As of Friday evening, Entergy’s outage map indicates the following number of outages:

  • Jefferson Parish — 4,900

  • Orleans Parish — 406

  • St. Charles Parish — 600

  • St. John the Baptist Parish — 1,113

  • Tangipahoa Parish — 2,642

Entergy crews and contractors are assessing damages to the electric system and restoring power where it’s safe to do so after a second wave of storms impacted South Louisiana overnight. As of 6:30 a.m., approximately 86,300 customers were without power, with the hardest hit areas appearing to be Acadiana and the parishes of Tangipahoa and Jefferson, as well as the River Parishes between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. While weather forecasts called for the potential of excessive rainfall, there are reports that winds reached upward of 80 mph in some areas. Combined with lightning, winds of this level can down trees and limbs and impact power lines and other electric equipment. Estimated times of restoration will be developed as additional intel comes in from the field. Entergy Louisiana

Entergy officials report that there will be customers who have power sooner than others. A breakdown of times are listed below:

  • This evening, May 17 – Zachary area

  • Late tonight, May 17 – Assumption, East Baton Rouge, Calcasieu, Jefferson Davis, Livingston, Pointe Coupee, St. Charles, West Baton Rouge and Westbank of Jefferson Parish

  • Late Sunday morning, May 19 – Tangipahoa and Acadiana parishes

  • Late Sunday night, May 19 – Eastbank of Jefferson Parish and River Parishes
