‘Thought it was a skunk’: Unusual squirrel spotted in Stark County

STARK COUNTY, Ohio (WJW) – A mail carrier was taken aback on Thursday when she spotted a squirrel with an unusual pattern in Stark County.

Amy Beavers told FOX 8 she was delivering mail in the Hartville area when she noticed the animal.

“I thought it was a skunk at first, then maybe a kitten, but then it stood up and I realized it was a squirrel!” Beavers said.

Last September, a viewer shared photos of another rare squirrel seen in Olmsted Township. That squirrel, however, was completely black with a white tip on its tail.

Animals with rare color pigments have made headlines in the past, including an albino raccoon, turtle and porcupine.
