This snap of a squirrel asking for food is entertaining the internet

Seeing squirrels in public parks is no unusual sight - but it’s not often that some will get quite as close as this one did to comedian Jake Head.

The New York-based comic tweeted a selfie with the squirrel, adding the caption: “New York squirrels will just tap you on your shoulder and ask ‘you gonna finish that?’”

The snap, posted on September 29 and shared on Reddit, has already been viewed online nearly a million times, sparking hundreds of comments from people.

Many speculate whether the squirrel is actually genuinely trying to communicate, with one user writing: “He even looks like he’s doing the sign language for ‘eat’”, and another adding: “With so many different languages spoken in NYC, the squirrel went with the tried and true method.”

For others, the snap sparked a more serious discussion on the prevalence of squirrels in parks and whether they should be fed or not.

One person wrote: “I live in a small (kinda rural) lake town in Texas, and the squirrels in our state park do this too.

“Some of them are quite persistent, actually. The Rangers have to remind campers NOT to feed the wildlife.”

And others shared their tales of food-theft by squirrels, from stealing whole slices of pizza to even running away with lit cigarettes.
