This Lumberjack Cake Is a Lumbersexual’s Dream Dessert

Elizabeth Marek of the Portland, Ore.-based Artisan Cake Company has created the cake of every lumberjack’s (and lumberjack lover’s) dreams.

This faux log is a masterpiece fit for the Oregon Trail, with freakily lifelike chocolate bark, a beautifully crafted (and completely edible) axe, and buffalo plaid red velvet cake.

Marek is apparently obsessed with all things lumber and was inspired to make the cake when she watched her husband chop down their Christmas tree.

In her own words: “I love trees. I love beards. I love plaid.”

Luckily there’s no “beard” in this confectionary creation. But knowing this talented baker and author of Artisan Cake Company’s Visual Guide to Cake Decorating — who has created everything from a dead fish cake to a sneaker cake — we wouldn’t put it past her.

The full tutorial for Marek’s lumberjack cake is only available through Sugar Geek Show, her subscription-based online baking tutorial database that describes itself as “Netflix for cake decorators.”

The free membership will get you access to basic tutorials, but if you want to get into the nitty-gritty, paid memberships start at $17.99 per month.

If you’re not ready to commit to a membership, consider looking through this slideshow and fantasizing about eating this cake in a cabin, by a fire, or under a wool blanket, with the smell of pine hanging in the air. And if you want to bite off a more manageable dessert project, consider making some chocolate bark.
