Thieves break into cars, steal one in Byron Township

BYRON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — The Kent County Sheriff’s Office is looking for the people who smashed their way into several vehicles south of Wyoming and stole one of them.

It happened Tuesday in the area of Byron Lakes Apartments off 68th Street between Burlingame and Clyde Park Avenues in Byron Township, the sheriff’s office said.

“We’ve had a couple break-ins in the neighborhood, and before it was never as severe as it was this time,” said a neighbor who wanted to remain anonymous.

The thieves broke into 14 vehicles, often breaking out the windows and looking for things to steal. The sheriff’s office said they mostly got away with credit cards. Some cars had the windows broken but there was nothing inside to take.

“It’s just sad when you drive through the neighborhood today, so many cars have protection where their windows were busted out,” the neighbor said.

One vehicle was stolen. The sheriff’s office did not provide a description of the stolen car or the suspects on Wednesday.

“It’s frustrating that people just keep doing this and just can’t find better stuff to do,” the neighbor said.

One of the vehicles had a camera inside showing two people rummaging around looking for something to steal. The owners said there was nothing to take.

The sheriff’s office reminded people not to keep anything valuable in their car and call police if they see anything suspicious.

“It just so happened that night that I didn’t lock my car and someone went through it. I never leave anything valuable but it’s still kinda, you know, to feel violated like that is just annoying,” the neighbor said.

Anyone with information about the break-ins and car theft can call the sheriff’s department at 616.632.6100 or Silent Observer at 616.774.2345.
