There's A Sriracha Shortage And It Could Last All Summer

Brace yourselves. This summer just got a lot less spicy. An upsetting announcement from Huy Fong Foods Inc., the maker of Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce, recently surfaced on social media. In the statement, which dates back to April and was addressed to their buyers, the company warned of a shortage of sriracha and other spicy condiments due to chili pepper scarcity caused by weather conditions.

Bloomberg reported that Huy Fong confirmed the legitimacy of the press release on Wednesday, June 8.

"Currently, due to weather conditions affecting the quality of chili peppers, we now face a more severe shortage of chili," the statement reads. "Unfortunately, this is out of our control and without this essential ingredient we are unable to produce any of our products (Chili Garlic, Sambal Oelek, and Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce). Therefore, all orders submitted on or after April 19, 2022, will be scheduled AFTER Labor Day (September 6, 2022) in the order it was received."

Huy Fong went on to add that they will not be accepting any new orders before September due to lack of inventory. Huy Fong dealt with a similar incident back in 2013 when delayed shipments created a bit of worry, but not a full-on shortage.

Naturally, social media is now on fire with news of the sriracha shortage. Some have gone so far as to proclaim the shortage the worst food news of the year, while others are eager to head to their local grocery store to stock up on the condiment

Sriracha and its fiery comrades are just a handful of the food items that have seen shortages in recent months due to weather conditions or supply chain issues. Other popular items that have faced shortages this year include avocados, Rice Krispies, and even popcorn.
